Copa del Rey: Complete List of All Winners in History

The history of Copa del Rey champions over the years. Since 1903, the Royal Spanish Football Federation has organized the Copa del Rey, an annual knockout football competition in Spain. Teams from LaLiga, Segunda División, and certain qualifiers from lower divisions are eligible to participate.

A total of 121 single-match finals have been contested since the first final between Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid. Although the 1904 final was canceled, there were two simultaneous tournaments and finals in 1910 and 1913 due to disputes between the FEF and UCEF, both of which were considered official.

As of 2023, 36 different teams have reached the final, with 15 of them having won the tournament at least once. The team that wins the Copa del Rey also completes a domestic double if they win LaLiga (established in 1929), a feat achieved 18 times. Barcelona is the only club to have won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League in the same calendar year, having done so in 2009 and 2015. The tournament was not held in 1938 due to the Spanish Civil War.

Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi are notable for their records in the competition. Messi holds the most consecutive finals played (10), goals scored (9), goals in a final by a player (7), assists (6), final appearances (10), and man of the match awards (19). Busquets is also a key figure in these records. Both Messi and Busquets, along with Barcelona’s Gerard Piqué and Athletic Bilbao’s Agustín Ganza, share the record for the most victories, each with seven titles. Between 1942 and 1945, Telmo Zarra scored in every final he played in, setting records for the most goals and assists in a final, as well as for the most consecutive final appearances (four, in 1950).
